Nasopharyngeal cancer: photon and carbon-ion combination treatment research

This study used photon radiotherapy with a carbon-ion boost. Assessment needs to match both disease stage and the specific irradiation plan.

Single-center clinical study

Population and background

Patients with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer in a Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center study.

What the evidence shows

This single-center analysis included 69 non-metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer patients, with median follow-up of 31.9 months. It reported three-year overall survival of 94.9% and local control of 96.9%. The regimen was photon IMRT plus a carbon-ion boost; these cannot be described as results of every proton or heavy-ion regimen.

Conclusions that cannot be drawn

Non-metastatic results cannot be extended to recurrent or distantly metastatic disease. Local control and overall survival are also different endpoints.

Questions to ask your doctor

Are my stage and previous radiotherapy similar to the study? How many sessions are proposed for the photon and particle regimens, and which structures need special protection?

Sources and scope of interpretation

The following sources support the disease information or explanations of evidence on this page. Access and actual patient acceptance requirements must be checked separately for each region. The information checking date does not indicate review by an external medical expert.

Tell us what help you need

Ask about the costs and arrangements for cancer care. SinoCareHub helps organise records, contact hospitals and follow up on arrangements. The receiving hospital and doctors determine the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Describe your needs in the initial consultation. The team will help organise medical records in subsequent communication.

After you submit, we'll first get in touch to understand your situation. Hospital acceptance, the care plan, and costs will be confirmed later.
