Retail pharmacies in China supply many common medicines. Not every medicine is suitable for self-selection. Prescription medicines require a prescription. Qualified doctors and pharmacists decide prescribing and dispensing. Check the generic name, dosage form, and strength. This is safer than looking only for a familiar overseas brand.
Medicines may come from hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, primary-care facilities, or compliant online pharmacies. Their medicines, prescription processes, prices, and insurance rules differ. Hospital pharmacies suit clinical assessment and complex treatment. Retail pharmacies handle common medicines and suitable prescriptions. Online sales still require the right medicine category, prescription process, and pharmacist review.
Four common routes for medicines
- Hospital or clinic pharmacy: Suitable for a first visit, unexplained symptoms, tests, or a medicine that needs a clinician's prescription. The hospital decides whether to prescribe and how its pharmacy dispenses.
- Retail pharmacy: Suitable for OTC medicines used according to their leaflet, or medicines dispensed against a valid prescription. Whether it can dispense an outside prescription depends on the prescription, medicine category, and local process.
- Primary-care facility: Community health centres and similar facilities may provide common-condition care, chronic-disease management, or public-health services. Confirm the medicine and visit arrangement with the facility first.
- Compliant online pharmacy or local delivery: Eligible OTC and prescription-process medicines may be ordered or delivered. The platform or pharmacy confirms stock, delivery area, identity checks, and timing.
Prescription and non-prescription medicines
Prescription medicines need a doctor's prescription. Follow package directions for over-the-counter medicines too. A pharmacist or pharmaceutical technician must guide Category A OTC sales. Customers cannot take prescription medicines from a self-service shelf.
Seek hospital or clinic assessment if symptoms are serious. Do the same if their cause is unclear. Ask first if you use several medicines.
What to bring
Bring a current prescription, medicine box, or clear label photo. List the generic and brand names. Include strength, dosage form, and schedule. Tell the pharmacist about allergies and other medicines. Bring relevant records when available. You may also need a passport for the prescription process.
An overseas prescription shows past treatment. It does not guarantee the same product in China. A doctor and pharmacist decide about a substitute. They also decide about any dose change or new prescription.
What to check at the counter
Ask about the active ingredient, dosage form, and strength. Check intended users, directions, warnings, and expiry date. Similar names do not prove the medicines are the same. Combination products can contain more than one ingredient.
You can say: Please check the generic name, strength, dosage form, and directions.
For prescription medicine, say: I have a prescription and my medication record.
The National Medical Products Administration search can check product approval information. It does not replace a doctor's or pharmacist's assessment.
Choosing a pharmacy or online seller
Retail pharmacies must hold a drug business licence. They must meet staffing and management requirements. Online sales can require a prescription source, identity verification, pharmacist review, and suitable medicine category.
Check the seller and its licence information. Check for pharmacist support and product details. Check delivery conditions before payment. Do not buy medicines of unknown origin from individual sellers.
Narcotics, psychotropic medicines, blood products, and vaccines have special controls. Other medicines may have them too. They are not ordinary online purchases. A compliant pharmacy or medical institution must confirm each medicine's route.
Keep the purchase record
The pharmacy record should show the generic name and marketing authorisation holder. It should also show batch number, dosage form, strength, quantity, price, date, and pharmacy details. Keep the receipt, outer packaging, leaflet, and prescription when applicable.
Ask about storage before paying for a cold-chain medicine. Ask before delivery or travel between cities too. Follow the leaflet and pharmacist's advice.
Insurance, dual channels, and special medicines
Out-of-hospital insurance settlement depends on enrolment, provider status, local rules, prescriptions, and medicine scope. Some areas use “dual-channel” arrangements for eligible medicines. This does not cover every pharmacy, prescription, or high-cost medicine. Confirm with the hospital, pharmacy, and local insurance office before buying.
For cancer, rare-disease, or cold-chain medicines, ask about supply and storage conditions. A large chain or online advertisement does not guarantee stock, delivery, or insurance settlement.
Practical steps for international patients
- Decide whether you need clinical assessment, prescription dispensing, or an OTC medicine.
- Prepare the generic name, prescription, package photo, medicine list, and allergy history.
- Choose a licensed pharmacy or compliant online seller. Ask the pharmacist to check product details.
- Check the medicine on delivery. Keep the receipt and package. Confirm changes, cold-chain needs, or special controls first.
Next step
See China prescription guidance for hospital review and medication records. SinoCareHub can organise existing records and communicate through the hospital process. It does not diagnose, prescribe, dispense, or ship medicines.
This article provides general pharmacy information. It is not individual medication advice. Qualified doctors, pharmacists, and medical institutions decide medicine choice, prescribing, and dispensing.
