Standard clinics and international departments are not simply lower and higher tiers. The right choice depends on department availability, case complexity, language, waiting process, and budget.

Guide

Standard clinics and international departments may use different booking and payment processes. Their departments and doctors may also differ.

Use current hospital information when booking. The word 'international' alone does not guarantee faster access, English communication, or direct insurance billing.

01

Compare departments and visit options first

For complex care, first confirm the department, clinical team, and admission process. An international department may simplify communication. Some specialties still use a standard clinic or another campus.

02

Then compare language, timing, and cost

Ask about language help, booking, wait times, and charges. Clinic, test, and admission fees may differ. If a direct comparison is difficult, list the available options before deciding.

  • Department and doctor availability
  • Language and process support
  • Charges and payment

03

Who needs extra confirmation

Confirm the full plan before travel for admission, surgery, or ongoing care. Also confirm accessibility help and direct billing. Ask separately about companion identification and visitor rules.

FAQ

Should I choose a regular clinic at a public hospital or an international medical department?

Chinese health authority policies guide international patients toward international medical departments. There is no single answer. Consider your condition, target specialty, language needs, waiting arrangements, and budget.

International medical departments may offer easier communication. However, their services and fee structures usually differ. Before booking, compare the actual care options at your target hospital. Do not choose based only on the department's name.

Do international patients need a passport for a Chinese hospital appointment?

Usually, because many hospitals require real-name registration.

The hospital may require your passport name, passport number, and other details. Requirements vary by hospital and booking method. Before submitting them, confirm how the information will be used. Your appointment details must match the identification you bring to the hospital.

Neither the patient nor family speaks Chinese. Will someone help us at the hospital?

Yes. Language support can be arranged in advance if you do not speak Chinese.

Tell us your language, destination city, appointment type, and number of accompanying people. We will identify where interpretation or accompaniment is needed during your hospital visit. This may include registration, consultation, tests, payment, medication collection, or admission. Before service begins, we will document the scope, duration, and fees. Additional needs, including document translation or overnight support, will be confirmed separately. We can provide both medical interpretation and everyday language interpretation.

Can a Chinese hospital bill my international health insurer directly?

Not always. Both the insurer and hospital must support direct billing.

Without direct billing, you may need to pay first. Then submit invoices, itemized charges, and medical records according to the insurer's requirements. Confirm the arrangement separately with the insurer and hospital before booking.
