How to choose a hospital and doctor in China

You may have found several hospitals and specialists in China and still be unsure whom to choose. Start with the question, “What do I want this visit to address?” Use your existing diagnosis and test results to identify the relevant department, then look into the doctors’ areas of expertise and how to arrange a consultation.

Be clear about the purpose of your visit

  • Your current diagnosis or main symptoms, and the tests and treatments you have already had.
  • The question you want this visit to help resolve.
  • The country you are currently in, when you could travel to China, and any preferences or limits concerning the city, language and budget.

“Going to China for medical care” can mean confirming a diagnosis, discussing the next stage of treatment or attending a follow-up after surgery. The questions you ask a hospital will depend on your goal.

For example, “I have a pathology diagnosis, have completed a stage of treatment and would like a specialist’s opinion on what to do next” tells a hospital more than “I want to go to China for cancer care.” When you contact the hospital, name the diagnosis, describe the treatment you have had and explain what you most want to ask the doctor.

How can you compare hospitals?

  • Do the department and doctor profiles cover your condition and the issue you want to discuss?
  • Should you contact a regular outpatient clinic or the international medical department? Which records do you need to submit first?
  • Which language can the doctor use, and do you need to arrange an interpreter separately?
  • Which campus would you visit, what appointment dates are available and how can you confirm the fees?

Comparing the details side by side is more useful than relying on a hospital’s overall reputation. Start with the hospital and department’s official websites, then note the questions you still need answered.

Even when two hospitals have the relevant specialty, this comparison helps you see what information is still missing for each. Ask the specific department about acceptance and appointments; a hospital’s classification or photographs of equipment cannot answer those questions.

Where can SinoCareHub help?

If finding this information is difficult, or you are unsure how to choose between hospitals, you can look at SinoCareHub’s Hospital and Doctor Matching service. We consider your condition, the purpose of the visit, and your city and timing preferences. We then identify hospitals, departments and doctors for further contact, explain the reasons for the suggestions, and outline whom to contact first and what to prepare.[1]

The suggestions should help you understand why a hospital is being considered first, what the recommendation is based on and which questions still await the hospital’s response. If your first choice cannot currently accommodate you, you can also discuss whom to contact next.

The choice remains yours. The hospital confirms whether it can accept you.

How do you contact the hospital you choose?

Find the appointment channel for the specific department and ask how to submit your records. Requirements can differ between clinics.

For example, Peking Union Medical College Hospital’s International Medical Services directs patients to its official app for regular daytime, evening and Saturday clinics. Special appointment clinics, obstetrics and dentistry can only be booked by telephone. Peking University People’s Hospital’s international patient page lists email, telephone and on-site contact routes.[2][3]

Your shortlist should therefore also state “which department to contact, which channel to use and what confirmation to wait for.” These two hospitals illustrate differences in booking procedures; their inclusion does not imply a partnership with SinoCareHub.

If you also need SinoCareHub to help contact a hospital or coordinate an appointment or consultation, we will first agree the scope and fees with you. We need your authorization before organizing or transferring medical records.[1][4]

How should you arrange language support and costs?

Ask about language support during the visit itself: who will help you communicate with the doctor, understand examination instructions and discuss the medical advice that follows? An English booking interface does not answer those questions.

SinoCareHub’s Medical Interpreting Escort service provides on-site English interpreting and assistance with registration, consultations, tests and collecting medicines. Contact us in advance if you need another language.[5]

When asking about costs, distinguish hospital consultation, examination and treatment charges from SinoCareHub coordination or interpreting fees, and from third-party expenses such as flights and accommodation. Services are billed separately by item; you can check what is included in the service directory.[6]

Before requesting a quote, ask yourself, “Do I only need hospital matching now, or do I also need help with appointment communication and an interpreter at the hospital?” Explain the help you currently need, then check what the quote covers.

What can you send us first?

If you are not sure which hospital to contact, start by sharing some basic information through Contact SinoCareHub. You do not need to upload your full medical records in the initial form.

You could write:

I am currently in … My diagnosis or main concern is … I would like to explore … in China. My planned dates are … My preferred city is … I need language support in … I already have … records and would like suggestions on hospitals and departments to contact first.

An advisor will clarify which help you need, how the fees are calculated and how to send your records. If you already have a hospital and doctor in mind, you can simply explain the step you need help with.

SinoCareHub provides medical coordination and is not a medical institution. Qualified hospitals and doctors make decisions about diagnosis, treatment and acceptance. This article concerns preparation for non-emergency care. In an emergency, contact a medical provider where you are.
